Club History
The WDHVC was founded in 1989 by a small group of historic-vehicle enthusiasts in and around Wisbech. Many of the founding members were already affiliated with national historic-vehicle clubs but found it difficult to attend weekday meetings held in major cities. They therefore decided that a local club – open to all makes and all classes of old vehicles – would better serve the community, and the inaugural meeting was held in Wisbech.
In the early years, the club’s focus was on weekend rallies. After four years of this format, with growing interest, the club introduced its first Road Run in 1993. The event proved highly popular and has since become a fixture each August, offering a scenic route of around eighty miles through Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire, with static displays at Peterborough and in Wisbech.
WDHVC’s membership includes owners of vehicles spanning nearly a century (from the 1920s up to the 1990s) and covering just about every mode of road transport. Members bring along vintage and classic cars, motorcycles, scooters, vans, commercial vehicles, camper vans, caravans, buses, and military and emergency vehicles. Many members participate in shows and rallies across the British Isles and have won prestigious awards. Others continue to use their vehicles as their everyday transport. Importantly, ownership of an old vehicle is not a requirement for membership — the only real criterion is an interest in, and enthusiasm for, preserving and celebrating historic vehicles.
WDHVC is a non-profit organisation: all funds raised throughout the year and during the Road Run are donated to local charitable causes. Since its inception, the club has raised over £23,000, distributed to good causes in the local area, including the East Anglian Air Ambulance and the Norfolk Blood Bikes.
The club is affiliated with the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs (FBHVC), an umbrella body which exists to uphold the freedom to use historic vehicles on the road. Through this affiliation, the WDHVC ensures that its members’ interests are represented at a national level and that its activities align with recognised standards for the preservation and use of historic vehicles. The club now boasts a membership of over one hundred enthusiasts.
We always welcome new members, with or, without a car! Whether you own a vintage vehicle or simply share an interest in classic motoring, you’ll find a friendly and sociable atmosphere here. New cars always spark plenty of conversation, and we love seeing members’ pride and joy. You’re very welcome to come along to our monthly club meetings, meet fellow enthusiasts, and get involved in the club’s activities.
Our monthly Club Meetings are held at The Chequers (The Little Chequers) in Tholomas Drove. We gather from 7:30 pm, with notices starting at 8:00 pm. Afterwards, there’s usually a quiz and/or raffle.
